Jack Stanfield, the main character, is forced to steal 100 million dollars ($10,000 from the 10,000 richest people with an account in his bank) from the bank for which he designed a security system. The people stealing the money threaten to kill his family if he doesn't comply with their demands.

Ford stars as Jack Stanfield, online security expert for a banking chain. He is introduced to a possible client named Bill (Paul Bettany), in what turns out to be a setup: Cox and his men are holding Ford's wife and their two children hostage. He wants Stanfield to hack into the bank's computers and transfer a fortune to Cox's offshore accounts. When Stanfield fears they're going to kill his family, he puts his life on the line in order to save his family. A very relevant film in today's times of cyber crime.

The plotline is similar to a real-life robbery that occurred in the South of England on 22 February 2006, twelve days after the movie's release in the USA.
